Video interviews are now becoming commonplace to conduct the interview process with video platforms such as ZOOM, Skype, Google Duo and Whatsapp as some examples being used.
We wanted to share our 5 top tips for pharmacy candidates who have a video interview coming up.
1. Reliable Internet Connection
Firstly, make sure you have downloaded the relevant video interview software that the pharmacy company has requested to use for the video interview.
Critically your internet connection should be strong, preferably private domestic broadband, and your device suitably powered and charged.
If your internet isn’t great, consider using your mobile device on 4G.

2. Ideal surroundings
Ensure you are located in a quiet area with no background interference. This is important for technical performance, but also for the concentration of both parties. Show care for yourself and the employer by arranging an optimum space.
It’s likely that you’ll choose a room at home where you can sit stationary and privately – possibly a bedroom or office. Check what the camera has in view. You might then discover you need to clear the space behind you temporarily or adjust things like lighting and your chair position. . No one is expecting or suggesting studio-perfect conditions, but simple things make a big difference.
3. Clothing
The appropriate dress code for a video interview is a popular concern. It’s easy to become slightly self-conscious about dressing so formally for what is essentially a video chat. However the answer is very simple – you should approach it in exactly the same way as you would a normal interview.
4. Body language
Just like with a normal interview, your general body language should show confidence. The basic requirement here is that your poise and posture is of someone ready and capable. Don’t let the less formal surroundings or perception of a video interview impair your physical demeanour.
You will want your body language to operate within the confines of the camera. Technically you should be seated still and positioned so as not to inadvertently move out of shot. So while talking with your hands and expressing yourself naturally is encouraged, gesticulating so wildly that your face disappears is less effective.
5. General etiquette
- Start by checking that both you and the interviewer can see and hear each other clearly.
- Be cordial, listen out for names and refer to them and maintain eye contact where feasible.
- Heighten the expressions in your voice and speak loudly and clearly.
- Punctuate your answers to avoid confusion
- Allow ample response times for any possible lag.
The Takeaway
The main thing to remember when approaching a video interview is not to treat it too differently to the traditional kind!
